Since Leila was on Christmas break, Renee met her for lunch at the Side Rock Cafe.

“Renee Buchanan, is there an update about you and Jake that you need to share?” Leila dropped her hands on the table.

Sitting across from her, Renee sighed. “I wish.”

Leila wagged a finger. “There’s no denying that Jake has a crush on you, too. The heated looks between you two on Christmas Day at the fire station were hard for anyone to ignore.”

She sighed. “Maybe he likes me, but I’m not sure he’ll do anything about it.”

Leila shrugged, leaning back in her chair. “You once told me that Ezra was one of those guys who needed a little push in romance.” She wiggled her eyebrows. “Maybe Jake needs a push to steer him in the right direction.”

Renee waved away the suggestion. “I’m having a hard time hiding my feelings for him, and he definitely knows how I feel.” She could only hope he did, but her brothers were the last people who needed to know.

“Does Ez suspect anything?”

Leila shook her head. “He doesn’t pay attention to things like that. Plus, he knows you and Jake are like best friends.”

Renee sighed. Jake was her best friend.

Leila continued. “He wouldn’t read anything further into your friendship.”

“I’ll eventually have to confess how I feel about his friend.” She drew a slow breath. “In the meantime, there’s nothing to say.”

The waiter returned with their check, and Leila grabbed it. “It’s my treat this time.”

Renee didn’t argue, since she paid for Leila and Bianca’s meals from time to time. She glanced at her watch. It was half past noon.

“Sorry I need to run. I’m supposed to meet a potential client at one o’clock.”

Leila pulled herself up and shoved the chair back in place. “I need to get Ezra a peppermint latte.”

Renee walked with her to the takeout counter.

“I still can’t believe you’re almost Shine’s CEO.”

Renee couldn’t believe it either. “Keep those prayers coming. Just in case God doesn’t want me to take on such a huge responsibility.”

After a warm embrace, Renee left for her appointment.
